Tradition and history

Fresh dips in the blue, the smell of coffee beans and a landmark of Danish origin - all typical of Helsingborg today.

Cold bathing

Cold bathing is a popular activity among the citizens of Helsingborg and a long-standing tradition dating back over 150 years. Along the coast, from north to south, there are three cold bath houses: Pålsjöbaden, Kallis and Rååbaden. Cold bathing is said to have health benefits such as reducing stress and increasing the release of endorphins, the so-called 'feel-good' hormone. It is no surprise that this tradition is held dear in the city.

Fika

The "fika culture" is literally rooted in Helsingborg and dates back to 1886 when the coffee roastery Zoégas opened its doors for the first time. Since then, the coffee culture has characterized the city and today there are several cafés to enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea with something tasty on the side.

Tura

Over the years, it has been common to cross the strait to Helsingör in various forms. Already in a letter of privilege from 1414, the City of Helsingborg stipulated that there should be ferries between the city and Zealand. The term 'tura' only came into use in the 1950s when passenger traffic increased after the Second World War. To "tura" means that you take the ferry across the strait without getting off in Helsingör, you simply stay on the boat and go back and forth as long as you wish.

Kärnan

Kärnan, a symbol of Helsingborg's history, is an impressive medieval tower that proudly rises above the city. Dating back to the 14th century and Danish King Erik Menved, Kärnan has survived centuries of war until Helsingborg became Swedish. The name "Kärnan" can be traced back to the 18th century and Carl von Linné's book Skånska resor. Today, the tower is one of the main tourist attractions in Helsingborg, where you can go up and enjoy the fantastic view, and a symbol strongly associated with the city.
